As a designer, one issue I’ve had to contend with, from every conceivable angle, is copying. One of the things I’ve come to learn is that there is no single more confusing issue for a designer, filled with so much grey area. This is ultimately because all artists copy, in the beginning. In order to learn to do something differently, one must first learn to do it conventionally. In addition, all artists have been inspired by multiple outside influences - it is our need to respond in some way to these influences that makes us artists to begin with! However, an artist needs to respect other artists as well, and here is where things get complicated. In this video, Micheline and I discuss the “etiquette of copying” and try to explain how we personally try to navigate the grey areas of copying, imitation, and inspiration while retaining our integrity as designers.
